Starmont receives City of Napa Recycling Award

Hi All,

I was happy to be invited to, and attend an awards ceremony today on behalf of the Starmont Winery recognizing the recycling efforts of a few local business and presented by the City and County of Napa and the Napa Recycling and Waste Services.

The awards were given out by Mayor Jill Techel of Napa and Napa County Supervisor Keith Caldwell, along with representatives from U.S. Congressman Mike Thompson's office, State Senator Noreen Evans office, and State Assembly member Michael Allen's office.

There were a total of 20 awards, and Starmont was one of two wineries to receive an award. Starmont was recognized for having a 99% diversion rate from landfills. This was also the second year Starmont has received this award. Starmont's 99% diversion rate is an outstanding achievement, and one of which I am extremely proud. 99% was by far the highest diversion rate mentioned, with most mentioned in the 65-75% range.

I would like to thank and congratulate the efforts of all of the employees at Starmont, as it your efforts that make this possible. It takes awareness and the desire to do the right thing on the part of all of the employees to achieve this kind of success.

I would like to thank Carlos Ayala, our Bottling and Facility Manager, for his specific efforts in helping with this achievement.

It has been a goal of mine to get as close to zero landfill as we can at Starmont, and we are very close at 99%.

We were presented with a plaque, and a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Legislature.

While this award does not make our wine better, it does help to highlights and underscore the legitimacy of our company's efforts in sustainability. I also believe that it demonstrates our attention to detail on a daily basis, as we were not trying to win an award, we were just trying to do the right things. It is nice to be recognized for those efforts.

Cheers,

Sean Foster

More Great Scores from Wine Spectator & Wine Enthusiast!

Merryvale wines have been piling up the great scores over the last couple of months, with the most recent highlight from the Wine Spectator Insider.

On October 29th, Merryvale 2006 Syrah, Napa Valley, received 92 Points from James Laube, with this praise... "Bold, rich and full-bodied, with grapey, peppery wild berry flavors that are intense, deep and persistent, ending with a touch of nutmeg and chewy tannins. Drink now through 2013." Buy this wine!

And, just out in the December edition of Wine Enthusiast Magazine, is Steve Heimoff's glowing review of Merryvale 2004 Profile which was awarded 94 Points & Cellar Selection. Heimoff writes, "Merryvale's Profile remains a star year after year. The '04 is nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon, and stuns with its power. With a smooth, complex tannin structure, it's rich in currants, blackberries and cedar, but is too young to open now. Should hit its stride around 2010 and continue to develop for some years after. Tasted twice, with consistent results." Buy this wine!

Other recent scores:
90 Points, Wine Enthusiast Merryvale 2006 Chardonnay, Carneros
90 Points, Wine Enthusiast Merryvale 2005 Merlot, Napa Valley
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast Merryvale 2005 Chardonnay, Carneros
92 Points & Editors' Choice, Wine Enthusiast Merryvale 2005 Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
