Larry Hyde farms some of the most sought after grapes in the cool Carneros growing region of Napa. This wine is a blend of two blocks of Chardonnay from the Hyde Vineyard. The grapes are hand-picked, carefully sorted, whole cluster pressed and barrel fermented. The wine spends 13 months in French Oak, with 60% new barrels.
The 2007 vintage was one of the best in recent memory. After a normal bud break, the valley experienced mild weather through the growing season with a slightly cooler summer and warm September. This climate resulted in slow, even ripening with a crop just slightly smaller than normal, and the highly desired small berry size. Winemakers across the valley are very excited about the 2007 vintage.
As is typical with Hyde Chardonnay, this wine is complex without being assertive, displaying refinement and an expression of the unique vineyard. Intense aromas of pear, apricot, orange blossom and ripe apple are framed by crisp minerality and spicy oak notes. The wine is rich and balanced in the mouth with long finish.
