2009 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley

Sometimes, life calls for a time-out. Vacations don’t always come fast enough, but even a few hours away can be incredibly rejuvenating. Loving wine and being a foodie, I found a perfect respite in a wine and cheese tasting at Merryvale Vineyards.

Shawn Dougherty, the winery’s sommelier and food and wine educator, was trained at the French Culinary Institute. Joining him, you taste through four of Merryvale’s wines, including their acclaimed Silhouette Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, with cheeses from around the world, introducing pairing concepts which you can apply at home. The tasting itself takes place inside of a large, wooden cask. The $45 charge covers the educational session with wine and cheese.

The 2009 Sauvignon Blanc, Juliana Vineyards ($26) was served at the tasting. It is a fabulous wine — refreshing, fruity, yet with depth and complexity from four months aging in French oak.

2009 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley

This is a zesty, fun wine with an intriguing pungency, fresh grass and lemon citrus. Fantastic food wine.
