"2001 Vintage Retrospective Tasting"

2001 'Profile', Napa Valley

The 2001 Profile is an excellent wine, but recent vintages are even stronger. The fully mature 2001, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, exhibits a dense plum/garnet color as well as a sweet perfume of tobacco leaf, incense, roasted herbs, and red and black currants. Good opulence and a lush texture result in an attractive attack and mid-palate. Then the wine softens and seems fully mature. However, in a cold cellar it will last another 7-10 years.

"Vivid, rich & least expensive"

2001 'Profile', Napa Valley

You simply can't judge wine by price. That's so even when all prices are steep and vary little from one label to the next.

This lesson was delivered again the other day when officials of Merryvale Vineyards in the Napa Valley brought their annual comparative blind tasting to Sacramento for the first time.

For nine years, they've visited 10 cities in quick succession, inviting local wine stewards, wine merchants and the like to sit down to a flight of eight high-end cabernet sauvignons and Bordeaux-style blends. Going in, tasters don't know the identity of the wines, though it's safe to assume one will be from Merryvale.

This year, the wines were from the 2001 vintage, and each was priced at around $100.

My favorite was the fourth wine from the left in the crescent of glasses before each taster. It was vivid with the smell of Bing cherries and rich with the taste of sweet fruit. It also had the longest finish of any wine in the flight, and was the most European, with suggestions of sandalwood and madroƱa. It was the Merryvale 2001 Profile, at $85 the least expensive wine in the tasting. Two-thirds of it is cabernet sauvignon, but it also contains merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot.

Wow, They've done it again!

2001 'Profile', Napa Valley

Wow, they've done it again. Merryvale is pumping out quality wine year after year! Profile is Merryvale's top tier of red wine, comprised of Bordeaux varietals from some of Napa Valley's most esteemed vineyards, such as Beckstoffer, Georges III, To-Kalon, Las Amigas, as well as their own estate. Assembled from mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with a splash of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 91% were new. This opaque, garnet-colored wine has an explosive nose of roasted nuts, violets and toasty oak. Once it hits your palate, mocha, currant, black cherry, and bramble fruit lead into a dense, structured mouthful of wine! The finish is long, with evident tannins. It should only be consumed now by those who prefer a big, full-bodied Cab. All others should lay this down in their cellar and forget about it for at least five years!

"Four Stars!"

2001 'Profile', Napa Valley

An outstanding Meritage blend. You have to act quickly to ensure that your cellar fits the Profile or vice versa. Perfect balance with great depth and silky texture. There are layers upon layers of aromatic flavor. Plums, cassis, mocha, and olives are all detectable and delectable.

An amazingly delicious and complex wine. Dark and rich, filled with black currant, cocoa and new oak flavors and lush tannins. Finishes with a scour of fresh acidity. Made from some of Napa's greatest vineyards, such as To-Kalon and Georges III, this is a wine with a great future.

Review of 2001 Profile Barrel Sample: "Intense and concentrated, offering rich mineral, anise, currant and black cherry fruit, with toasty oak and coffee scents. Turns smooth and polished; should be tremendous."
